Sexarbeit in “Second Life”: Interviews

I hate this “SL is dead bullshit”. It always had a constant population, it wasn´t dead after a few years, in the developers mind it was too early on the virtual world scene with it’s possibility and complexity plus the bad media representation (the pedophilia cases were featured as SL is all about kiddy porn and abusing child looking avatars). Or my other fav is that people in SL cannot handle human face-to-face connections and they are just socially awkward people. SL is not something that a few “pervs are living out their fantasies on”. It is a platform for transforming the human experience and interaction. You can find theatre groups, RL dance companies, bands, charities (Feed a Smile, Make a Wish, Relay for Life just to name the biggest ones) having their own events here. Residents of SL are not a group of disconnected people. We are connected on a platform just like people on twitter and facebook, but using our avatars we can mimic social interactions more fluidly and interactively, after which Twitter or Facebook looks kind of rigid as a social platform. Just like socmedia pages tho, SL has its pros and cons too.

I have been wandering in Sansar a bit, but as it was getting more ahead in development, in its current state my laptop I play games on and use SL are not geared up enough to run Sansar smoothly. I follow developments, but I don´t have much first hand experience on Sansar in it´s current state. The structure of sex work in SL is already established over the years, payment, services, furniture for diverse activities etc. that Sansar will still need a few years to catch up on what it can offer. Plus as the new golden child project of Linden Labs I think the devs are clearly closely supervising of every region that is being created. In it´s current state, the SL Grid is so big, if illegal activities happen it relies on users to report it to LL or the authorities. When the sex industry began developing in SL, alongside many people were using the ever expanding Grid as a little corner of the Dark Web, where they could exchange illegal pictures of punishable acts (snuff, child porn etc.). However, now it is getting easier and easier to track down who uploaded a certain picture or did a certain act (practicing prostitution wearing a child avatar), so those who were looking for satisfaction in these kind of desires moved onto other platforms (Dark Web for example, I know it existed way before, and SL didn#t have upload and transaction processes as trackable lets say 13 years ago).

Wie steht bzw. stand “Second Life”-Entwickler Linden Lab dazu, dass in seiner virtuellen Welt sexuelle Dienstleistungen gegen Geld angeboten werden? Hat sich das Unternehmen je dazu geäußert?

Tbh, I would rather ask LL about this than me. As long as you are not doing “ageplay” (child having sex with child or adult avatar, or child going through sadistic fantasies or is present during such acts if you catch my drift) you are fine. Basically, as long as you are not threatening the physical or financial safety of anyone, and you are not doing anything with or around a pixel child that you wouldn’t do a real one (physical punishment etc. included) you can do what you want. It happens too with escorts in SL that if they ask a client who sounds or seems through voice or cam to be very young and cannot show proof of age (showing on cam a small part of their id with their birthdate) they report the avatar to LL that this avatar is being exposed to indecent content, they are too young to be on SL (you have to be at least 18 “officially”) and usually alarm their region owner/club manager etc. so the avatar can get banned and not enter the club or region anymore. If LL finds out or gets a report that there might child abuse happening (regardless of RL or SL child), the region can be shut down immediately. A region usually costs quite some money to run (around $295 Monthly Tier), building up traffic on the region so it shows up higher in the searches takes a lot of money and effort on its own so of course people are very diligent about not getting an inspection visit by LL.

Was schätzt Du, wie groß der Escort- bzw. Sexarbeitsmarkt in “Second Life” aktuell noch ist? Wie viele Sexarbeiter_innen gibt es und wie viele Kund_innen?

The escort/client influx has some rules. Depends on the time of day, some guys like their tit show on cam with their morning coffee, some like to chat with a girl naked on cam or see her dance on a pole in SL before they go to sleep. I usually made my biggest bucks around EU lunchtimes, this is when most of the people were on their lunch break, or at home, or in their private office, or in the loo on their phone and with their lunch and powernap they liked to jerk off to me shaving my pussy or legs even or watch my tits jiggle. At this time, often the first people were waking up and getting ready to work in the USA and they to SL to say hi to the girls on the stage, tip us a bit, chat on voice or chat a bit and then off they went for their workday. The rule in virtual sex work as I experienced it is the following: people with disposable incomes (young professionals, family dads, etc.) are usually busy during the summer, the kids are at home or they are traveling, therefore they are not really having the chance to hop from club to club as an act of self-care. However, during the summers many young 20 something girls (tho there are women in their 30-40-50 even 60s) are not in college, they had time, they would like to earn some money to spend on SL or maybe as a bit of side money. Yet the “summer lows” is when the traffic is down and most of the escorts rely on their regulars for income and use their savings to spend in SL.

Usually the clients expect to have a girl behind the girl avatar. It can cost a club its reputation if a rumor began that one of their escorts is actually a guy or they cannot prove that the avatar is being used by a woman. In my experience this is max. 5% with trans- or homophobia the case but most usually the client wants to feel like they are having a connection with a woman, they are getting this “female attention” of them asking how they are, how is their day, for them undressing and lending this sense of intimacy. For that time they pay with actual money through which they purchased Linden Dollars to pay you. Just like in RL you would go to a brothel, pay nicely, be respectful and you trust of getting good service but then the person servicing you turns out to be not what they were promising you. Of course you would be disappointed with the service and question the authenticity of the place too. When I was escorting I didn’t tip my toes into checking how many gay or non-binary escort seeking clients are out there, tho just to be exclusive of all tastes, as a leap of faith I bought myself a strap-on for my avatar and ended up never using it on anyone *sad face*. There are however clubs to serve lady clients wanting some attention from guys, yet back in my day a few years ago there was 1-2 and they were struggling to make a buck. However, there was one club where all the lady escorts went after hours to tip the guys and get some TLC themselves.

I have been in SL for over 8+ years. I began escorting in the Spring of 2018 and stopped working in clubs around the beginning of 2019. I let my adboards run out of time, and I just had eventually less and less exposure to possible clients. I still get there and there a message from some regulars who only use SL to find themselves a girl to watch on cam or live out a fantasy with in written roleplay. If I liked that client because they were a gentleman, I am happy to give them a session to this day, yet is happens like once every three months. Usually these clients request me to do something that I did before for them and they really liked (example: me blowing on a dildo, not showing my eyes or whole face, but it is visible that I have very nerdy glasses on and freshly washed hair. Somehow this turns this guy on so much he is willing to pay for it over and over again, another guy knows I am a uni student and I study social sciences and he loves to talk with me about culture studies and literary analysis while i am rubbing lotion into my tits after having a shower front of him. Sometimes I notice him through voice that he is masturbating, sometimes I hear him sipping on his coffee and just having a chat with a woman who got naked for him).

Warum hast Du Dich dafür entschieden, wieder aufzuhören?

I was getting back to the grove of my studies and I wanted to start my own Kleinunternehmen. I didn’t have the time and motivation anymore that is necessary to keep up an active stream of clients in SL escorting which requires you to be online a lot if you wanna make decent money.

I was a lot at home so I could cover a lot of stages at clubs I was loyal to. I was often studying, gaming, cleaning, cooking or doing usual stuff in RL while my avatar was on SL. My boyfriend and I were living in a one room apartment so often I just said quickly “Camshow, ten min, no mic.” so he knew he can still do stuff around me, just dont walk into the frame:D Apart from him and a close close friend of mine nobody else knew irl that I was doing this.

(etc.)

First, logging in, the adboards usually told you who and how many times someone clicked on your adboard. You could drop them a message to say hi and offer them your ratecard or not. Usually when a client is horny, they come, they want an escort and they want them NOW. So your best bet is being online a lot, many adboards show that you are online. Apart from that if you are not freelancing, you go to a club which hopefully has high traffic, get ready for the shift, aka dressing up nicely (there are things like topless tuesday, fetisch friday etc.) and you get on the stage usually for at least 45 minutes at a time. Most clubs require you to message 15 min beforehand that you want to get off stage so one of the girls online can come to the club and get on stage so there is always somebody covering the stage and greeting clients. In SL you can set your viewer to beep when someone enters the region or a certain radius which is useful if you dont want to sit at your computer all day, want to tab out, play or move away from the laptop. Then basically it is the waiting game. Have talks with clients, VERY OFTEN the client likes to have a chat (voice or text) first and then they actually want to spend more time with you in private. Very often lonely clients come in, want to talk with a lady in lingerie, tip you some moderate sum and leave. Most of my own income while escorting (around 400 Euro of which I cashed out 300, ofc this in the span of over 8 months or so, you have to spend on yourself too to keep up with the standards and client desires) came from having adboards up at the two most frequented freelancing places, immediately 3-4 of them. You decide how long you are on stage, usually, there is a clock clubs use to track everyone does their minimum hours (2 to 16hours a week usually), so you log in and out of that, plus the tipjar that splits the tips you earn while on stage. If a client books you and you use the club´s rooms (imagine the japanese love hotels with themed rooms from babygirl room to fimdom to spaceship to regular high end brothel) it is required to pay through the tipjar so the club has a cut for their own expenses. Often these clubs have their own adboards so lure clients in but that is its own business as well which I can cover in the next episode of this podcast ;D

I was doing escorting on my main, I only have a sparschwein alt so it meant when I was online it was a potential that someone offers me big bucks for a bit of my time. After a while I was getting weary of this, you don´t want to reject the mulah but eventually it gets tiring. Often clients start with basically catcalling you in im then they get your ratecard, they accept or they get outraged and nope out or they start trying to haggle your prices down (no like awwww okay from 3500 lets make it 3000, but awww sexy bae why dont you do it for 500 for me, im so hard for you).

So yeah that was a motivation too to stop, I wanted to join communities in SL, i was in a family at that time who knew and they were all chill about it. However, you cannot do the regular exploring, roleplaying and so on in sl while your time online means you might be offered money to move away from what you are doing and undress to a stranger front of your camera in your home. So yep eventually i was calling quits.

Okay back to the daily routine, there was a lot of hooker drama as we called it, back in the day, clubs and girls rivalising over the few well paying generous clients which was basically doing the highschool cheerleader drama but from a safer distance (i’m such a dick lol).

However, if your club owner was actually well established in their lives (most usually doing online sexwork fulltime, tho often the clubs struggled in downtimes so it meant owners were basically prostituting themselves to keep their virtual brothels up another month longer and to cover land, adboard etc. costs)) It reminded me a bit of the geisha wars in the Kyoto Hanamachi from the 18th and 19th century.

However, i have been in a club which i really loved, i loved the team of ladies, we talked a lot on discord but the owner became more and more unstable in her life with financial issues, drama around her, she was a very famous camgirl on livejasmin at one point and she was coming off of it and her money was running out, tho as we know the jobmarket can be quite shit in the usa, eventually all this stress got to her and she closed the club.

To the kind of clients: I had a very good client relationship with two gentlemen with physical disabilities who told me they really enjoyed the session with me and that they are unable to have sex in rl due to financial limitations to get the right furniture and medical intervention to enable them. I don’t care what people say but I was proud of myself. Other than that, lonely single guys in their twenties, young professionals who travel a lot and SL basically can offer them a cheaper version of the “girlfriend experience”. I had guys who had girlfriends, my impression was that they do love their girlfriend, this is just part of their porn consumption in a different way with a bit more intense thrill than watching something prerecorded. Plus if someone says, ewww you are paying for porn that is not real in SL? then I would ask, show often do you pay for porn on its own that you watch all the time?

I had a few elderly gentlemen, I had a few married guys with a similar sad history: relationships went bitter, sexless marriages and some of these men were looking themselves in the shower and they were watching me through Skype on their phone while the water was running, being very nervous all the time. Some of them were like “HURRY NOW QUICK SHE RAN TO THE CORNER STORE” only that they would disappear after 3 minutes “unsatisfied”. Those situations and some sad half sentences from these men affected me and after a while I didn’t feel okay with sharing intimacy with them. I would never be a homewrecker but I cant really explain what made me uncomfortable that much.

I asked my boyfriend how he experienced this phase of me and he wrote this: “Für mich ist es kein Problem, wenn meine Partnerin mit anderen Menschen flirtet oder Intimität teilt.

So he was glad when i was picking up more classes and after a while i was really spending the minimum hours at the clubs i was a part of just to not get fired lol.

Welche Möglichkeiten gibt es für Sexarbeiter_innen in “Second Life”, um Kund_innen zu gewinnen?

ADBOARDS ADBOARDS ADBOARDS. Pay attention to quality attention and time with your clients to they will think of you next time they got some cash and a boner. I actually had a lady (irl confirmed, I heard her voice) who paid me really good money for text based rp. She loved the fantasy of ugly transformation, bestiality with D&D and Warcraft themed creatures, voreophilia. Well this is not something I do all too often, but I was so eager to be part of my clients´ fantasies that one of my big selling points was that “I dont know my way around this, but for you i will school myself in it”, so I did what my clients requested as long as it wasn’t on my tabboo list. (Yep it is good to have a list as an escort on your taboos, limits, safewords etc. if the client deliberately oversteps or disrespects, you just end the session and send them on their merry way).

Ca. 400 Euro, as said around 300 was cashed out that I used to pay some bills for the household to help out my boyfriend who was the sole breadwinner through freelancing work while I was in reha.

The BDSM scene in SL is HUGE. So you can find a lot of variations, currently the two leading ones are sugarbaby-sugardaddy relationships (if happens sessions based and not relationship based), financial domination, domme play, femdom is another huge place ((check out Loseria in SL)), next to that it is basically cam, voice. With just text based sex (plus avatars fumbling on furniture) is not really a selling thing. Tho there are some gentlemen who are very good at writing sex scenes. Oh mama those are a joy. Plus this weird thing with the AFK Sex dolls which I dont get lol.

Was sind die Vorteile der SL-Sexarbeit – einerseits für Dienstleister_innen und andererseits für Kund_innen?

Client: If you got money (like 5 euros worth in L dollar) you will get something nice for sure and you will get it really quick. Escort: Safe as in not selling your body irl, no STDs, no need for pimps or bodyguards, you can do it freelancing tho it is recommended to be in a club which already has a few regulars. And as well never the harm of physical violence. I don´t say physical injury, once I had a busy busy day where i met a couple and a client and they both hired me 4 times on the same effing day cause they liked me with my pingpong balls and big dildos (do your kegels ya’ll).

What i wanted to say, with all honesty, my claptrap was SORE, i had to sit on a wet towel lol. If you thought you don’t get sore muscles in your vagina pls think again.

Just avatar sex often doesn’t cut it, they want voice or cam through which SL only is the platform on the internet where you find these services and it can be even easier to be anonym through SL than on any websites out there. But back to it: Do you like it when someone sends you a nice text? Yeah? And when someone flirts with you and makes you feel special and sexy? Oh yeah? Then imagine for an hour there is a surrogate sexting penpal who is there to support you through exploring your sexual fantasies. I did some fetish stuff that is hard to do in RL (within my own limits ofc), unless you are Ed Gein or Armin Meiwes. Think of giant woman small man and so on. Tho mostly it was enough for me to jiggle my tits on cam or show guys how I can blow a dildo veeeery aesthetically pleasingly and wrap my boobs around the same dildo too. ;D

There is porn, sexting textlines, sex voicelines, camgirl sites, VR sex (works in SL too btw), plus embodiment plays a big role. I had clients who had female avatars, or completely different appearances than their rl ones (when a husky voiced guy calls you with nice fur wearing barbie doll avatar ya know this is surely not how they look irl). Tho what I have issue with in SL is people fetishizing racial features, there were many girls who were using japanese names for themselves and really leaned into the oversexualized barely legal animegirl look with huge boobs and dripping pussies.

A bit off the chart, but you can mention it if you want: But what REALLY BOTHERS ME is the BBC and horny angry black woman fetish played by people who are really really sure not that race. It becomes visible very often when an avatar just looks waaaay too oversexualized. Many clubs I know actually dont hire you if they see your body is improportionate or that you are really trying to play into racial fetishization with your appearance and speech. My other issue is fetishizing transgender, for example femdom dressing up her “boyslave” as a schoolgirl and showing her around as an act of humiliation. I myself had a client once who was a dad with a cheerleader daughter so he wanted me to find him a cheerleading outfit, make him wear it, find an empty sex club with a stage and make him dance on the pole there. He was loving it so much he paid me 500L every minute. For 20 minutes. It was hilarious and he loved the humiliation but when not dressed as a cheerleader he never made a single negative comment and that he fully respects the LGBTQ+ community. I am really not into the humiliation but somehow these very fine lines worked with him so I could offer to support him through this experience. However when I see someone 24/7 online, in clubs and they really trying to get off of this “forced transgender as a form of humiliation” i get really irked by it.

Some people even rp it out with their femdoms that they get sex reassignment surgery as a punishment and humiliation. i get it is a fetish and these people are totes fine irl but this irks me and cant even see it as funny or any form sexually thrilling.

Jap. In the club i was really involved with we talked on discord when a client who was weird, or was really mean and overstepping. We had a separate channel for such reports so immediately when a manager saw it they could kick and ban the person and alarmed the girls in announcements that this guy is harassing or demands free sex and camshows. With regulars, usually you saw it on a tipboard who tipped the most. However as I felt it in that club, that was smaller than some bigger clubs, when a girl met a good tipper a few times, they focused on building an almost exclusive relationship with that patron. Some girls very really graceful and nonposessive of guys, some got really catty but you saw they only look at these clients as money cumming cocks. Eventually i realized my club owner was such an escort herself, when she saw that a regular of hers came to the club while she was offline, nobody else was on stage but me, we got to talk and he hired me twice in two consequent days for a good money. She got really pissed that how do I dare take her regular. Which I didnt because I didnt know. But she got jealous. Later we cleared it up that I meant no bad intent.

In short there is a more official way for going around with bad clients. In some clubs there was a policy, do not say which client hired you, for how much and what they like because this often led to girls privately messaging the guy, offering themselves, or when the guy came to the club they get hyperpushyflirty with him till he felt weirded out and overwhelmed and left. This i can get behind so girls who don’t earn too much don’t feel shit.

All the clubs i have been so far, they are strict that you do not messaging the guy in ims and hog their attention because it just leads to overwhelm and give the other girls a chance too on stage to get his attention – as well do not beg him to hire you.

When i was in the industry, the club owners had a group where they talked and shared information if there was a griefer, troll or just very very mean client going around who harassed the girls or tried to hack their accounts and such. Rarely but if it comes to that the club owners turn to lindenlabs as well for support.

– MESH BODY (much higher polygon count, smoother animations for body, fingers, face etc. plus it just looks more and more realistic than the standard avatars)

– Optional but get mesh genitalia (aka interactive pussy and anus).

– Find a niche.

– What makes you special as the hooker among all other hookers? Are you educated, you speak different languages (i pulled in a lot of clients from german speaking countries even if my german is broken but they frigging loved it. They said it is so much more chill talking to an online escort in sl while they are jizzing on their keyboard), are you good in erotic hypnosis, dommeing, are you an adorable rope bunny, you are great at dirty talk around specific topics? Do not confuse it with “what makes you a good lover and partner” but what is a persona you can create and market. You can still be you, but you will have to brace yourself that you are not you but a professional who has to have a haltung and personality they can pair with their dienstleistungen.

– If doing camshows, keep your sextoys in pristine condition.

– If you are new and want to aim for a bigger club, start with a smaller club first to build resume and clientele. Then move onto the target bigger clubs if you can dedicate the effort and hours.

– Still good with possibly not making money?

– Can you work in a team with the colleagues? Can you be flexible when they need someone for a client or for the stage?

– Have a spanker script on if thats what you like, have underwear the client can click off of you if you give them permission.

– Often your avatar should be min 30 or 60 days old if you want to work in a club. use this time to learn SL.

– Visit some 1 hour workshops for how to use the SL interface, how to deal with griefers etc just for your own peace of mind.

– Have some disposable money on your avatar. Starting out an avatar with the mesh body, clothes, hair, makeup etc. takes money even if you are a bargain shopper. Embrace that you might still not make money right away.

– If you get accepted to a club, find some big sisters and pick their brain.

– If you do voice, pls get a decent mic or headset. Have your tech set up, do not make your client wait for you to set up your cam and mic on the bed for 40 minutes.

– If you decide you want to offer cam and voice watch some youtuber videos on camgirls sharing their stories, documentaries on camgirls and so on.

– Be okay with it that there are days where only jerks come and try to get pity sex from you. Be okay that sometimes the client only wants to talk about their horrible day and want to feel close to someone. Be okay with hearing some peoples sad stories. Often for people SL an escape, some people do not want to talk, some do.

– Know when to take a break. Do not try to rely fully on this income. This is something that is a bit of pocket money and a kinky hobby. Stay in school.

– If you get lucky and earn a lot of money. Remember there are many charities in SL present. Feed a smile, wigs for kids, relay for life, a few hundred lindens can add up to someones meal or a mental health charity being able to afford more counselors.

Caroline

Ich bin Caroline Resident in Second Life.

Caroline is der sgn. MAIN also der Hauptaccount. Die anderen sind sgn. ALTs (alternative accounts).

Second life war nie tot.

Oder wie Linden Lab es ausdrückt: Your World, your imagination.

Fast alles was man in Second Life findet ist tatsächlich von Nutzern erstellt worden.

Ich bin seit 2007 in Second Life aktiv. Under Cover sozusagen.

Etc.)

Also Call Girl auf Reservierung.

In Linden Dollar.

Welche Dienstleistungen bietest Du an?

Ganz einfach.
